NRS/PSY 342 Complementary & Alternative Therapies

Course Description

This is an undergraduate course worth 3 units that is cross listed in both nursing and psychology. This class examines alternatives to conventional health approaches such as acupressure, herbal remedies, relaxation, therapeutic massage, naturopathy, qigong, and yoga. There is emphasis on individual and social lifestyle approaches, legal and ethical barriers, governmental status and support.
This class has been available online for many years, but this will be my first semester teaching it. I usually teach obstetric nursing clinical in the nursing program. As a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM), I feel uniquely qualified to teach this course as many of my patients seek out nurse-midwives as a safe and satisfying alternative to western medicine's approach to maternity care.

Description of QLT Course Design

I have designed a learning activity that encourage peer-to-peer engagement by requiring application of knowledge gained in the module by way of a collaborative google doc.

Description of QLT Course Design

I have incorporated assignments in the course so that nursing and psychology students can to apply critical thinking and evidence based practice skills introduced in the module. This group collaboration assignment in google docs incorporates elements of facilitated discussion and critical thinking that will be applicable academically in selecting appropriate scholarly references, professionally for directing clients/patients to reputable sources of internet information, and personally as healthcare consumers.
