BIOL 203: Quantitative Methods for Biology
Fall 2018

Course Description

Biology 203 is an undergraduate lower division introductory statistics class with a focus on biostatistics. The course is required of students in the Biology Program, but many pre-Nursing, and Environmental Studies students also take the course. The overall course learning objectives focus on learning how to use and interpret common statistical methods and critically read statistics reported by others. I have taught the course only once previously as a face to face course and the online version may not manifest for some time. The course I will teach in Fall 2018 will also be a face to face format.

Description of QLT Course Design

I've included two QLT objectives here (3.1 & 3.2) as they are both demonstrated with the same example course material.

I have chosen to use online, freely available support materials as well as an optional textbook for this class. This is communicated via the syllabus as well as the "No-cost course materials" designation on the schedule of classes.

The course syllabus contains information on required materials. The syllabus provides the information for the recommended (not required) textbook. Two copies of the recommended or optional text book will be on reserve in the library (as this version of the course is on-campus) by the start of the term.
The syllabus also contains instructions on how students can obtain free copies of the statistical software package.
The section of the class posted in the schedule of classes indicates the course has "No-Cost Course Materials".
