Critical thinking

Course Description

This first year seminar integrates the CI mission and critical thinking with strategies to promote student success. Students will develop literacies (quantitative, information, scientific, financial, cultural), communication skills (oral and written), and multicultural perspectives (in national and international contexts). The seminar promotes success in major core courses and/or introduces students who have not declared a major to CI’s interdisciplinary “ways of knowing.” Co-requisite is ENGL 102/103, 105, or 106. This section will develop these literacies by exploring the intersections between personal information, big data, and privacy rights.

Description of QLT Course Design

My syllabus clearly states that no text is required and all required materials for the course are available through CI Learn.
I have utilized the library's ereserves service to link articles from the Library's subscription databases and to digitize book chapters and load them into my course. I have also used the library's streaming media service to stream library owned movies into my course.
Having all materials available within CI Learn, I don't have to worry about students not purchasing the text or getting behind while they wait for their text to arrive.

Description of QLT Course Design

To ensure a variety of perspectives I use articles, book chapters, TED talks, videos, and links to online content
The easiest way for me to get my content is through items the library has already purchased. I have linked to articles from the Library's subscription databases and used the library's ereserve service to digitize book chapters and load them into my course. I have also used the library's streaming media service to stream library owned movies into my course.
Students have access to all course materials within each module of the course. Additionally, if a specific material is referenced for an assignment, it is linked within the assignment instructions as we.
