Module 1 Overview
This module introduces online instructors to the fundamentals of online course design, while emphasizing how an effective course design promotes a student-centered learning experience. Principles of backward design, chunking content, and writing measurable learning objectives are covered. The module concludes with a consideration of the essential elements of an online course syllabus.
After completing this learning unit, each course participant should be able to:
- Identify the principles of effective online course design as detailed in the CI Quality Online Learning and Teaching (QOLT) rubric Links to an external site..
- Explain how the concept of backward course design supports student-centered learning.
- Distinguish between course goals and learning objectives.
- Explain the relationship between Bloom's Taxonomy and lower/higher order thinking skills.
- Formulate effectively written learning objectives that address lower and higher order thinking skills.
- Develop an online syllabus with CI (Google) Docs that contains key policies and information specific to online learning.
